February 06 Remember "Letters to Erik"? I know it's been at least a year since I updated this blog. The thing
is, I've been fairly busy with writing, working, teaching, and more writing. But hey, anyone remember "Letters to Erik," the E/Ch fic that I posted on FFN about two years ago? Due to the high number of positive reviews AND the number of people who asked me to get it published so they could keep a copy on their bookshelves, I have actually done so. Letters to Erik is now a paperback available to order online from Amazon or Barnes&Noble. This is a new, improved "Letters," with new characters, more angst, and an even better happy ending than I had originally provided. It even has a bit of a twist; I think you'll like it. So come one, come all, down to my author's page on Outskirts. www.outskirtspress.com/anwallace Tell all your friends, tell all your phan-buddies -- this was a lovely story, even if I do say so myself, and I'm very excited about the gorgeous cover art and the nifty revisions and additions I made to it. Erik is snarkier than ever. Kaveh is an even better foil for him. Christine is even sweeter and smarter than she used to be. And we even get a glimpse of shy little dark-haired Erik-Daae as an adult! Order it online, and if you like it, then please help me out by writing a positive review on whichever site you order it on. Thank you, thank you, kind friends. I really appreciate all your help! June 20 newest obsessionHaving been addicted to ALW's Phantom of the Opera since the early '90s, it should come as no surprise that now I'm addicted to "Cats" as well. H and I went to see a local performance of it, and we were so impressed that we immediately got hold of the movie... which I have been devouring repeatedly ever since then. I'm also in love with a cat. Several, actually. How embarrassing. But they're just so amazingly sexy that I can't help it! I'll post a picture of one of them tomorrow, to prove it. Oh, it was my birthday on Saturday -- wish me a belated happy birthday! Except for my dearest Ripper, who not only wished me happy birthday on the day, but also sent me a little prezzie that I'm very eager to start reading. (It looks very Erik-y and interesting). Denouement has been finished, except for the "deleted scene" which actually hasn't been written yet... and won't be posted even after it is written, because it's for "someone's" private perusal only. Now I just have to finish up Rogue's Gallery, and I'll be able to enjoy the summer with a clear conscience. Cheers! March 06 QuizHave returned safe and sound from our sojourn in western Europe, and was immediately tagged for a quiz by Ripper whom I've finally met in person (hello, luv!).

3. Mouette February 20 Tomorrow, baby!Am leaving work early tomorrow and catching the 3:30 bus to Boston, to get on the 7:55 AirFrance flight to Amsterdam, via Paris. Will have 5 nights in Amsterdam, then 5 nights in Paris (our friend from uni will join us for the Paris trip -- where we'll be meeting my honorary little sister, Ripper de la Blackstaff, in person for the first time!), then one more night in Holland in the village we used to live in, before we fly back home again. I'm so excited it isn't even funny! Just went out and bought a digital camera last night, specially for the trip. Will update when I get back, unless I can find an internet cafe or something over there. Might even publish pictures from the trip on here, who knows? Wouldn't you all just love to see pictures of l'Opera Garnier, for example? Or maybe the queen's palace in Amsterdam? The down side is that my son got sick yesterday morning, so I had to keep him out of school today. And will probably keep him out of school tomorrow as well, just to make sure he doesn't get exposed to anything else before we leave. Having a sick child on a 9-hour flight just would not be a good thing. But on the bright side, if he gets sick while we're gone, I can just bring him to his old Dutch doctor that we always used to see when we lived there. Oh, and my husband is going to be job-hunting, he says. Woot! I'm so excited! December 30 Going MadI really, really, really (really!) don't like my tendency to procrastinate. I should know better, I know I should, but every time I still just put things off and put things off. I hate that about myself. I've had most of a year to study up for the two exams I have to take in order to get my teacher's certification. I've done a little reading, a little studying, sure, but I haven't really taken it that seriously because I thought "They're all multiple-choice questions, and all in my area of study -- how hard can it be?" But my mum (bless her!) bought me the study guide for Christmas and I've been going through all their sample questions -- 75 of them -- and I've just been going nuts because this stuff is HARD! I have scheduled the first exam for Wednesday 11 January, which puts a huge time pressure on me -- which, actually, is probably just what I need to motivate me to get cracking. The test will be 4 hours long. The first three will be spent answering the 150 multiple-choice questions, and the final hour will be spent answering one singular essay question. And if I fail this test, it'll cost me $250 to take it again. So needless to say, I'm going mad with studying and cramming. No more writing, no more fanfic, no more nuthin' except school and studying for the next two weeks. And the worst part is that I know I did it to myself by putting it off so much! Grr. Might be time for a li'l New Year's Resolution or two, eh? Here's hoping I don't crack! October 25 Drat that Real Life stuff Real life has, unfortunately, gotten in the way of my finishing my last two outstanding fics. I do apologise... but the fact remains that I now work two jobs, have recently had a death in the family, and am committed to spending much of my "free" time on a special project with one of my jobs.
The upshot of all this is that, quite simply, I don't have much time to spend online anymore. I miss my chat-buddies a whole lot, but until things start slowing down I don't anticipate being able to sit down and catch up with you all any time soon. Or with my fanfic updates.
I've not abandoned them; Denouement and Rogue's Gallery will be finished... I just don't know when. I am not, however, the sort of author to leave an unfinished story posted and have no plans to finish it (except for that one Spike-fic, but that's a special case).
So, hang in there, and you folks who pray -- say some for me, would you? I'm having trouble being able to fit everything in! Thanks. October 12 Sailing a couple of new shipsI may never forgive Naomipoe for getting me started on reading Harry Potter fanfic a couple of nights ago.
She sent me a link to a very good Snape/Hermione story, and while I swore I would never, ever understand that ship, I have to say the story was actually pretty good. So I read another one. And another. And another.
And before I knew it, I'd devoured the ship and even had a little bit of Draco/Ginny on the side just for decoration.
God help me!
In other news, I'm toying with the idea of posting a Phantom comedy piece on FFN. I've got it aboug 2/3 finished, but don't know where to go from there, so I may post it anyway just to get ideas. I haven't really done much with comedy writing before, so this'll be new. But first, the last two chapters of "Letters" are going up tonight, baby!
Hmm... is anyone actually reading this blog? I rarely get any comments, so I don't know whether I'm wasting my time or not. October 09 "Letters to Erik" is finished!Yes, yes, the long-awaited ending has been written.
It has not been posted yet, as it desperately needs some polish...
but it is done, and should be up in the next day or so. So be patient, mes amis, because the end is in sight.
After that I'll just finish up Denouement and then I'll finally be free to return to my novel. "Will" and "Katie" have been missing me very much.
October 05 "Missing Scene" illustrationThe same "person who shall remain nameless" who has been illustrating all the rest of Denouement for me... has now taken it upon herself to illustrate the missing scene in my previous entry. Check it out, but be warned it's a little "rude." And funny. Don't be drinking anything while you see it, or else you may wind up wiping it off your monitor. Enjoy! October 04 A missing scene from "Denouement"This is a fun little scene that I wrote at the suggestion of SOMEONE who shall remain nameless, but who commented a few entries back with an idea for how I should end Denouement. Warning: it contains character death and mention of "shagging."
"Erik! Noooo!" Christine shouted in panic as she watched her lover tumble down the stairs. She ran down them, sobbing, and knelt down beside his broken and crumpled body at the bottom. "Oh, Erik! I told you it was too soon for you to get up!" "He always was a stubborn boy," Gerard observed as he hurried over. "What happened? Did Erik fall and kill… uh, I mean, hurt himself?" asked Philippe eagerly. They nodded. "Oh, that’s too bad!" he said with mock sympathy. "Let me call the priest, and we can bury him right here on the Chagny grounds." "Thank you, Philippe. I’m sure Erik would appreciate that very much," replied Gerard gravely. ("Gravely!" Ha!) Within a few hours, it was done. Erik’s body was neatly ensconced in the Chagny family tomb, and Christine turned to Gerard, sobbing down his shirt-front. "There, there, my dear," he soothed, putting his arms around her and holding her closer. He stroked her hair, marvelling at its softness – it reminded him so much of his lost Beladova! "Erik wouldn’t want you to cry, sweetheart. You must be strong and brave… like he was." "That’s true," Christine sobbed, surreptitiously wiping her runny nose on Gerard’s shirt-front. "He was far too brave to stay meekly in bed like the doctor ordered." "Brave, well… that’s one word for it," Gerard muttered to himself. "I can think of others. But Christine, what are your plans, now that your fiance is dead?" "I don’t know! I suppose I could go back to the Opera and try being a diva again, but without Erik’s influence who would want to hear me?" "I’m the manager there again. I’ll hire you, but on one condition." "What’s that?" Gerard got an evil glint in his eye. "You must allow me to call you Beladova from time to time… and sometimes, let me do this." He tipped her face up to his and kissed her. Gerard was an old French guy, and had been in love countless times. Man knew what he was doing when he kissed a woman, and Christine’s hormones went up in flames. She was surprised, but responded eagerly until Gerard backed off and took out his handkerchief. Wiping his recently-shaven upper lip, he then handed the handkerchief to Christine. "Though next time, sweetheart, it might be better if you blew your nose first." "Oh, I’m sorry!" Christine said, all contrite. "So… you’ll take me back to the Opera, then? And call me by the name of your lost love, who happens to be my late fiance’s mother, and you’ll kiss me some more?" Gerard nodded. "If you’ve no objections." She shook her head and blew her nose loudly. She handed the handkerchief back to Gerard, who didn’t want to touch it, but gallantly put it into his pocket. "Shall we go, then?" Philippe was more than happy to loan them a horse and wagon, especially since he had arranged for the corps de ballet to ride in the wagon back to his house for the night. The sun was setting as Christine and Gerard headed westward… which meant it was in both their eyes and made them cranky. They argued all the way back to Paris, and when they got to the Opera, Gerard decided the only way to settle things was with a jolly good shagging. Christine, who was too innocent to know what "shagging" was, agreed. After all, Gerard was an older man; didn’t that mean he knew best? And when she found out what "shagging" was, suddenly she didn’t feel much like arguing anymore. A Wonderful ParodyIf anyone has ever seen the Kopit/Yeston version of Phantom, the one that "Denouement" is based upon, you'll really enjoy this parody I found: "We Apologize for Any Inconvenience," by Christine Persephone. It's positively brilliant.
The main site is here, and since it's published on a Livejournal, the chapters are as follows (just to make it easier for you):
September 30 More Denouement picturesRipper has send me some more lovely Denouement pictures.
I'm currently deliberating over how I'm going to end that story and "Letters."
Open to suggestions, in case anyone has some ideas! September 20 New pictures!Have added several new pictures to Ripper's "Erik and Christine" gallery; one of which doesn't show Erik or Christine at all. But for phans of Erik and Christine, it still shows something we like to see: Raoul and the Persian, in the torture chamber!
There's something else we like to see, too, that I've just uploaded: Shirtless Eriks!
Check them out, over on the right. Scroll down to "Ripper's" gallery and then click on the "full size" box. She's really very good! September 15 It's UP!The eagerly anticipated, long-awaited (just a tad belated) WEDDING NIGHT SCENE from "Letters to Erik" is now posted!
I do hope no one is disappointed, because I worked on it for ages until I was satisfied. And if anyone is disappointed--sorry, but I like it and I'm keeping it.
Give me another few days and I'll probably have that one finished. Then I'll just have to go back and finish Denouement, and then I'll be safe to get back into X-Men mode so I can finish Rogue's Gallery. Poor Rogue, left hanging all this time while I revisited my phantom obsession!
I've got experience, though, with the hazards of slipping into another fandom while you still have outstanding (meaning unfinished) stories in the first one! Bad, bad, bad!
But after I've given Erik his happy endings, I'll feel free to move on to Wolvie... who, as long as he ends up with Rogue, certainly won't mind my revisiting old boyfriends like Erik, Jareth, and Spike from time to time.
Will St. Giles from my original novel has been missing me, too. Poor guy, he's been so neglected while I've been involved with other men! But soon I'll be back to him, and then I'll find an agent so I'll be able to share Will with everyone, too. September 12 No motivationEugh, I want to write some more on Denouement, since Ripper has re-inspired me with her marvellous drawings (check 'em out, over there on the right!)... but sadly, I lack motivation.
That, and I've been so busy with real-life stuff this week that I'm going nuts already and it's only Monday!
Well, as soon as I know what's going to happen next with my Denouement couple, I'll be sure and write it. And I still have to get my Letters chapter polished and uploaded. I haven't forgotten about anyone, I promise! Not even my poor, deprived Rogue from the X-Men story.
Well, I'm going to try and get my next "Letters" chapter out there tonight after my boys go to bed.
...and nobody's been leaving me any comments here. Darn. I like feedback.
September 09 Faith-based Message Board is up... is up!
Any of the fanfic writers on FFN who is also a believer in Christ is welcome to join up and post there about fanfic writing, faith, and how to mix the two. Introduce yourself first... and if you can, please try to use the same username that you have on FFN -- it keeps things simpler, and simpler is almost always better!
Mouette, Melody, Naomi -- I look forward to seeing you there! September 08 writing update Now that the "Letters" couple is now happily married (and I'll be posting another two chapters either tonight or tomorrow) and the pressure is off a little bit, I'm going to focus some more on my "Denouement" couple.
My pal Ripper de la Blackstaff has done some bloody marvellous drawings of the Phantom characters, and as soon as I figure out how to do it, I'm going to be posting them on here for you all to enjoy. She's really very good! AND she has promised to do some illustrations for "Denouement" for me, too!
Boy, I'd better get going on her special chapter then, hadn't I? It won't be for public consumption, but might be available for barter after I finish it. *g* Yes, I really AM that mean!
As for the "Rogue's Gallery" story that is still outstanding, I have nothing to say but an abject apology to all my X-Men readers. I simply can't write X-Men while I have these two Phantom stories unfinished, but I promise you that I'm doing my very best to finish them up so that I can then go back and finish up "Rogue's Gallery." September 06 The 1870's Wedding Ceremony I had to pick and choose which parts of the traditional Latin nuptial mass to include, when writing my "Letters" wedding scene. In case anyone is interested in seeing the whole mass in its entirety, complete with translations, the link I used is:
Got the whole thing written now; just have to polish it up and post it (probably tonight).
The translation for the "Gloria," that Erik and Christine sing together after the priest pronounces them wed, is as follows:
Glory to God in the Highest,
And on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise You. We bless You. We worship You. We glorify You.
Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty.
Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son.
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father.
You who take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us..
You who take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.
You who sit at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For You alone are holy. You alone are Lord.
You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the Glory of God the Father. Amen.
I found the English text of the "Gloria" at the Medieval Sourcebook -- a very useful site when you're writing about RCC traditions and rituals.
Wedding and religious talk I am finally writing an acceptable wedding scene for "Letters to Erik"! I've written the darn thing five different ways and five different times, and they all suck.
But now I think I've finally figured out how to do it, and am halfway through the wedding even as we speak. I should have it finished and posted by tonight, if all goes well! I hope I hope I hope!
I've gotten three positive responses about the Christian fanfic writers' message board, so when I get a couple hours to spare, I'll work on putting that together. I wasn't so much concerned with avoiding the "squishy" sex scenes...although as a happily (!) married woman I might be more tolerant of that sort of thing than the younger, unmarried crowd -- as long as the characters are married and the sex is well-written and not gratuitous, then I'm pretty much okay with it (I still prefer to have some things left to the imagination, though, rather than having every single titillating detail spelled out).
I can definitely understand and sympathize with others, though, who prefer to avoid that sort of thing altogether. I think we can definitely accommodate y'all through having a strict ratings system.
One of my main reasons for wanting to talk with other Christian fanfic writers, though, was not just to talk about the sex scenes, but to discuss the morality of various fandoms as a whole. As I said, for example, I've been interested in vampires for years, and have come under some condemnation for it -- "Why would any Christian want to have anything to do with something so evil?!" --that sort of thing. I couldn't really answer it, except to say that I love Christ, but still kinda liked vampires. One thing I've been discovering, though, is that belonging to Christ influences our entire worldview... and when we write, we write from our worldview, and the readers will pick up on that, if only subconsciously.
Anyway, I think we'll probably have lots to talk about, and I'm open to suggestions as to what boards to create for us to do our discussing in. Leave me a comment here or email me, and I'll try to create the board sometime in the next few days.
And in the meantime, I'm gonna finish up that wedding, I swear!
September 03 "Specialized" MB for fanfic writers Since I've been posting some of my fanfic on FFN, I've made some pretty good pals that I chat with on a regular or semi-regular basis. The strange thing is, most of them share the same faith as I do -- what are the odds? I do believe in coincidence, but I don't believe that's what this is!
So I'm wondering what would happen -- if there would be any interest, I mean -- if I created a special message board that's just for Christian fanfic authors.
Seriously, we have issues to face in our writing that the average Christian novel writer -- and the average fanfic writer -- do not have to face. Especially when we're involved with fandoms which contain, shall we say, more unsavoury aspects. Being someone who has been addicted to Hannibal Lecter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc. I can personally attest to some of these difficulties.
So how 'bout it? Any interest out there? Either add a comment here, or email me at clever_lass@hotmail.com and let me know what you think. Thanks! August 31 Offline, grr Now that I've finally gotten over my writer's block for the wedding scene of "Letters to Erik," my hard drive decided to die. I'm very sad, and reduced to typing on the little, itty bitty keyboard of my laptop. I guess I shouldn't complain; at least I still have the laptop to use!
But alas, there won't be a wedding scene--or any further updates--until I'm able to get my computer up and running again, and get the last few chapters saved off my old hard drive before it begins its new and exciting career as a paperweight.
To my chat buddies -- sorry I haven't been on much lately, but I hope to remedy that pretty soon.
I'm also thinking of starting up a message board for writers. Any interest? It'll be a specialized one. More details later; if you're curious, ask me. August 26 Denouement rooftop scene Ha! Finally, it's starting to come to me again! The crew on top of the roof are going to have one more little adventure before the real, well, 'denouement.' I've spent last night and this morning writing it, and should have it posted by tonight.
"Letters to Erik" has been giving me difficulties, but I think I've finally managed to iron them out. Will be working on the wedding chapter this afternoon, and with any luck should have it posted tomorrow.
Thanks, everyone, for being patient with me! I really want to just get these things finished, so I can move on to other things (such as revising my novel manuscript, for instance). August 23 "Letters" character photosSome folks have been reading "Letters to Erik," and have asked me what the characters look like. In one of my updates I included some links to photos of how I envision my characters, but some folks couldn't open the links.
For my view of what Christine looks like, try this one: Christine (Don't pay any attention to the Erik in that picture, though, as it's the Charles Dance one.)
To see how I envision Kaveh Tallis, the Persian, look here: Kaveh You have to imagine him a bit older, with more wrinkles, big streaks of grey in his hair, and with brilliant, jade-green eyes...but I do picture him looking not unlike Raymond Burr. (If you've ever seen the old silent Phantom of the Opera film with Lon Chaney in it, the "Persian" police inspector Ledoux looks very much like how I pictured the Persian in the Leroux novel.)
For a vision of how I see Erik, and the picture I've mentally modelled him after in my story, go here to see Raphael's sketch of him: Erik
In case anyone is interested in seeing some more of Raphael's "Phantom" fan art, the main page is located here, and contains some of the best artwork I've ever seen -- including some excellent and absolutely adorable "Phantom" cartoons. Don't miss them!
Another bit of fanart that influenced how I envision Erik is located at the Phantom Artists' website. This one is by Phantom, another excellent artist, and is called "The First Encounter." (Look for "Phantom" and then look for the title of the piece). It's a beautiful, heart-touching, and scary piece of art.
If anyone is interested in reading the story "Letters to Erik," it can be found on my fanfic homepage at FFN. "Letters to Erik" wedding It should come as no surprise to anyone that Erik is being difficult about this wedding business. He wants it the way he wants it, and it's up to me to figure out a way to give him what he wants, even though what he wants may be physically impossible. He has written a nuptial mass to be played at his wedding, and knowing him it's likely much too difficult for anyone else to play. Therefore I have to figure out how to make him able to be sitting at the organ playing, and simultaneously standing up to take his vows.
Wicked man.
It doesn't help that Christine is Lutheran, Erik is only nominally Catholic, and two of their four wedding guests are Muslem! Poor Father Reynaud is practically in a tizzy trying to figure out how much, if any, of the actual mass to include.
So if anyone is awaiting the wedding scene from "Letters," I apologize, but this is the reason for the delay. It's giving me hives. I may end up giving Erik an ultimatum: if he doesn't let me write his wedding the way I want to, he's not going to get his wedding night, which I've already written!
Yeah, that'll work.
"Denouement," on the other hand, is coming along swimmingly. There'll be maybe 3 or 4 more chapters after what's posted already, with at least one more action scene.
